The curved metallic Colorbond exterior of the new basketball centre, with six practice courts and two show courts, was designed to replace the aging facility in nearby Perry Lakes Stadium.
The building’s form is an expression of its sports function in an athletic and dynamic manner that can be easily expanded. From the natural bush strip to the south, the building rises to the street, with a series of masts and cables that aid support and herald its presence to the road.
The metal-clad fuselage-like form is raised above the ground with a lower band of glass, providing a sensitive connection with the landscape. At the entrance, a slice is literally taken through the form and glazed, offering a clear sense of entry and transparency.
The aesthetic narrative of the building speaks of sports and movement. The Colorbond sheeting with a custom orb profile and a Trimdek profile on the side, are an example of how relatively standard and cost-effective materials were able to deliver something very unique in design. As well as winning several awards for the architecture and use of materials, the Basketball Centre has been recognised for its sustainability.
