The Perth Police Complex in Northbridge is a five-storey high-security state of the art building covering a total of 21,000m² of floor area. The facility serves many different uses for 500 staff, with offices, conference rooms, reception areas, and the new Perth Watch House complex.
The Magistrate’s Courtroom accommodates seating for approximately 36 observers. It includes two video-monitored secure holdings cells and secure access for the magistrate via a dedicated lift from a dedicated secure magistrates parking enclosure in the basement. The finishes within this courtroom were specified to achieve strict acoustic requirements.
There are 52 detention cells and four video-monitored padded cells. The facility is managed through a highly complex, integrated security system that manages almost everything that “opens and closes” and covers all audio and visual requirements for the facility.
Construction techniques for the custody centre set a new benchmark for construction using stainless steel within WA. The requirements for the cells were very traditional. We recommended using stainless steel instead, which provides a maintenance-free environment, with specialised glass – a cutting edge composite of standard toughened glass with a polycarbonate interlayer provided considerably more durability.
