Red Earth Arts Precinct

The City of Karratha’s vision was “to provide an iconic and unique arts and cultural precinct, for local and regional communities, located in the heart of the revitalised city centre”.

The result is much more than the state-of-the-art 450 seat performing arts theatre. The facility also features a modern library, foyers displaying local Pilbara artists, roof top function space and cinema, and a lawned amphitheatre providing a venue for informal performances.

As a focus for the region’s arts, the building needed to be a work of art in itself. In a ‘gateway’ location in the centre of town, the building’s striking form echoes the contours, colours and materials of the adjacent mountain topography. Like the unique Pilbara landscape, the choice of materials used in the interior and exterior surfaces, create textures and hues that change throughout the day and seasons.

The building’s form provides an iconic landmark to the City centre, that both celebrates both the arts and beauty of the region, while setting a new benchmark for quality and contemporary architecture in the City of Karratha.
